On hard there is both more vek and more alpha vek, the alpha veks WILL kill stock mechs without pilot skills with one hit. My point with the "+3 Grid Defence" skill is that its a complete waste of one of the two skill slots. Sure some skills are better than others but the Grid Defence one is completly useless. Skills are supposed to be beneficial, but everytime one of my pilots gets "rewarded" with the grid defence skill i feel cheated, that is not true with ANY of the other skills. No one would complain if they did not have a single pilot with the grid defence skill, people would complain if that was the case with any of the other skills. I don't think this game needs balance patches tbh - but some extra content would be nice. Throw out your pseudo-perfectionism, and just accept that the game has some RNG to it. or just deal with it! The game does not become impossible to play, not even with a bunch of grid defenses. Not only that, but you are not limited to 3 pilots - you can get more through timepods and Perfect Island rewards, and the odds of all of them having grid defense are miniscule.
